A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single 4-wheeler

Last week at choir practice, Rich King shared a devotional about his recent adventure. Rich was led by the Holy Spirit to take a chance and help someone in need. His story is so special, I thought the whole congregation needed to hear about it. May we all have the courage to take these leaps of faith. Elizabeth Virkler, Director of Worship, Music and the Arts From Rich: I had a big 4WD quad that I was preparing to sell. Then I saw the devastation left by the hurricanes in Florida. That triggered an idea that there were people who needed a four-wheeler to clean up a lot more than I needed the money if I sold it. After contacting many organizations with zero luck, I decided to just drive to Florida, knowing I would find the right people when I got there. Since I was going to deliver my quad, I started gathering extra tools, hardware, tarps and electrical supplies. I also went to Costco and bought multiple pairs of work jeans and non-perishable food items. I drove to the Salvation Army Disaster Center in Hernando County, FL with my supplies. Another Richard, who was in charge there, was thrilled to get everything. After finding that the old battery on the quad had died on the trip out, I was left with the dilemma of finding a new battery. After a conversation with my brother-in-law, Randy (who I was to stay in Clermont, FL), he informed me that his roofer, Robert Dodge, would take the four-wheeler as is, fix it, and use it to help others. It was my best option at this time. Robert even came to pick it up at Randy’s place later that day. I drove 993 miles (14.5 hours) in one day as I left Florida, spending the night in Sealy, TX. The second day was shorter: 745 miles (11 hours). Finally, I drove 677 more miles (10 hours), home to San Diego. Whew – Thank You Lord!
