Getting to know Carol States and the Helping Hands Ministry

Helping Hands has been a Congregational Care ministry of RB Community since 1995. Our volunteers help with minor home repairs, such as replacing hard to reach lightbulbs, minor plumbing/electrical problems, minor computer problems, turning a mattress, etc. They feel it is their privilege to help you when there is a need. They are not licensed contractors and cannot do projects requiring permits. There is no charge for their services to our members, unless a part is needed, and then the member reimburses the volunteer for the purchase price upon receipt of the sales receipt. In addition, many of the “customers” also like to make donations. Funds received are used to support ministries within the RB Community, and to assist other members who may be financially insecure when a much-needed home repair need arises. After Covid, HH was reestablished by Carol States, coordinator, after many member requests were received. Carol was hearing the need from many of our congregants, while making Deacon calls. She brought the need back to the Deacon Board. Plans were soon made to reestablish this ministry, which opened again in November 2022 with a skeleton crew of volunteers. The first complete year of the newly established ministry served close to 50 members. Presently, the volunteers will soon celebrate close to 200 active calls and repairs. Before Covid struck, HH had around 25 active volunteers. Today the ministry has 5 awesome volunteers and is always looking for more to join the team. Each of the volunteers undergoes a background check ordered through the church office. Both male and female volunteers are needed. Our current volunteers are: Adrian Melnyk Larry Martin Keith Sherwood Robert Homer Barry Schuster If you would like more information on volunteering, please call/text Carol directly at 858-335-8567. Our dedicated coordinator, Carol States, was born and raised in Colorado Springs. She and her husband began attending RB Community in 1984 after his job transfer to the San Diego area. She retired in 2000 after thirty years in the commercial banking industry. Carol has a long history of service at RB Community: Deacon Board Member and is the newly elected Deacon Moderator for the upcoming 2025 year.

  • RB Community Library Board Member

  • Weekly volunteer in the church Welcome Center

  • Retired Pew Angel after many years of service.

Carol and her husband celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary just prior to his passing in 2021. She has three adult children and eight adult grandchildren. The Helping Hands Ministry gratefully follows Jesus’ guidance, knowing that by serving others in need they are serving Him as Lord. They all agree that, in doing so, they have experienced many spiritual blessings and would love to share their stories. From Carol States and Irene Dunny
