We appreciate the opportunity to share art created by small, developing hands in our preschool. Participating in art is a growing and learning experience for our preschool children. We provide opportunities to explore new mediums like paint, clay, cardboard, collage materials, etc. At this young age, art is fun and also serves a purpose of cognitive growth, learning to observe, question, explore, and reflect over and over. Preschool art experiences should provide children freedom to try new ideas without worrying about the final product- to play with the materials. Young children also learn that the art materials can be used to make a representation of something else. Children are often more involved in the process of “doing” than creating a specific product that looks like a specific object, like a flower or turtle. Young children may paint at the easel all afternoon but not be able to tell you what they have painted. It was simply the experience of painting that was important. Even with this truth, we see beauty in their creations and we hope you do too. Kim Vandergrift
