Pursuing Truth

Pursuing Truth

“True curiosity is the pursuit of truth, the exploration of God’s creation and will for the world.” (The Curious Christian – Barnabus Piper) We’ve been given the chance to prepare for heaven and it’s not about being good. It’s about being curious. Have you ever thought of heaven as the place you can explore and never get to the end of exploring? Imagine that heaven is the place where we can interact with God, consciously recognizing his presence and guidance constantly, as we explore all there is to explore in God’s creation. Praise is not just found as we sit or stand or sing in church, but it is also in our expressing wonder over the beauty of some flower sticking up among the weeds. I’ve heard how whales communicate through singing. I’ve heard how scientists studying birds, all up in an enormous tree, unraveled communication going on between them. I’ve read about dolphins and porpoises “talking” to each other. There are plants that communicate with each other through volatile organic compounds that move information through the pores of the leaves, through ultrasonic sounds, and through their root systems. We have a world that’s engaged, organisms that are involved in living life with each other, in cooperation and assistance. We don’t know how much of life is going on around us most of the time as we walk our sidewalks, cross our tiles, or drive our macadam. There’s a world that is in the water, under our feet, and vibrating through the atmosphere of which we are barely a part or understand. When we spend so much time choosing sides, selecting what to own, using up whatever we want, and not exploring each other, other creatures, or the nature of the world, we discount the value of God’s creation. Truth is not just about getting things right. It’s about getting into and discovering what’s real, and the depth of God’s created reality is inexhaustible. The heaven that lies before us will not just be standing around a throne saying how great God is, but rejoicing in the overarching splendor and magnificence of God by exploring with him the new Earth and new Heaven. Expect the limitless promises, not just of hope and comfort, but of exploration and encountering truth. Blessings, Geoff
