Reflection For January 3

We need to let God guide us, for we never truly know where we will end up. Like David in 1 Chronicles, we must recognize that God’s love and blessings are unmerited. David was overwhelmed by God’s favor; he wanted to build a temple for God, but God responded by promising to build a dynasty for David. Today, God continues this work through the church community, using it as a training ground to help us discover our gifts, find our voices, and share our unique talents with the world. Martin Luther taught that as we receive the grace of God, we are empowered to give grace to others. This requires a specific kind of humility which C.S. Lewis defined as "thinking of yourself less." Pastor Jason shared that he often avoids introducing himself as a "pastor" to keep from appearing "higher" than others. I find myself doing the same with my title as a professor, as I never want to dominate a conversation. Looking back, I am full of gratitude for the path God paved for me. I never expected to earn a doctorate or teach, but as I volunteered within the church, God led me into new adventures. He held my hand, helping me overcome the fear of standing before a congregation or a classroom. Like David, I didn't know who I would become, but I trusted God. Every gift we are given is a blessing intended to be shared. We lead best when we think of ourselves less and Christ more. As we move forward, let God guide your steps. Come worship the newborn king!
