Reflections for july 20

In 1732, Benjamin Franklin wrote: “To pour forth benefits for the common good is divine”. This reflected his civic leadership creed that the best way to serve God was to serve his fellow man. This week I saw this quote in a book I am reading, and I thought it related to the theme of last week about serving others as a core aspect of Christian life. We are called to live life in a way that reflects God’s love. We draw strength from our faith and the support of other believers. We are not alone. We have each other. By serving one another, we use our gifts and build community. When Geoff asked people to stand who help in a variety of things at this church, almost everyone was standing. Wow! We have people who are serving one another. We do love our neighbor as ourselves. We want others to discover their freedom and know that their sins are forgiven. Just think about how Jesus washed the feet of his disciples which was the lowest job he could have done for them. He cared for them. He wanted to be an example of how we can share our gifts and care for others. God makes us useful. We can overcome challenges just as Steve Rogers (Captain America) did. He was humble and tried to protect underdogs. We can embrace a life of service and draw inspiration from the example of Jesus and the support of our community. Reflections from Deborah Kelly.
