And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Colossians 3:15 (ESV) Peace with God is something all true believers have when they put their hope and trust in Jesus Christ. But the peace of God may not always be evident, depending on your day-to-day choices. Notice how this verse instructs you to let the peace of Christ rule. It is something you must consciously allow to control your heart. When you determine to abide in Christ and walk with Him daily, a peace beyond your understanding will continually fill your heart and dwell within you. As a disciple of Jesus Christ, it is one of the things you are called to do. So, how can you prepare your heart for the peace of Christ to rule and reign? There are several practical examples the Bible provides on letting peace rule in your heart. God’s peace reigns when you choose to rejoice in suffering, love others, be kind and gentle, and refuse to give way to an anxious heart. God’s peace rules in your heart every time you pray, submit your feelings to the truth of His Word, and invite Him into your circumstances and problems. And a peace-filled heart is a thankful heart! If your heart is void of thanksgiving and praise, it cannot be open for peace to dwell there. Practicing gratitude opens the door to a closer relationship with Christ and connection with others. It combats a myriad of negative influences that try to interfere with God’s peace ruling in your heart. Taking time to include thanksgiving in your daily life will bring to mind blessings that risk passing by unnoticed. An attitude of gratitude paves a clear path for the peace of Christ to enter! Pause to Ponder: What steps are you taking to let the peace of Christ rule in your heart? Pause today to make a conscious choice to give thanks, no matter what your present circumstance may be. Then actively share your thankfulness with others, blessing everyone in your path so they, too, might witness the peace of God through your life.
